The type of vest I am referring to are of the type worn with suits. (so not the sweater vests, poofy down vests, etc).

IF i wear a medium shirt would I be wearing a medium vest (which is borderline tight) or a large vest (slightly looser but i can cinch up the back).

    thanks.

    a waistcoat?

Don't they usually go by chest size? As in 38, 40 etc? Maybe thats just over here. I'd go with whichever size is most comfortable, it's not like you have to buy a medium because your shirt is a medium.

Wear it tight. It should not be loose unless you're wearing it unbuttoned.

Yeah, maybe try a different brand that has slightly different sizing/fit. You sound like you're in between sizes on that particular one..
