I went out to shoot some pre-prom pictures of my girlfriend's little sis.

It was nice having the big 14-24 on my camera, all the parents just moved right on out of my way!

The sun was pretty harsh, but I did the best I could. It sort of forced me into shooting a few different style photos that I wouldn't normally shoot, which I ended up loving. Here's a bunch:

the shots are good, btu the angles are a bit wonky IMO, and do I even have to ask the classic OT question? :hsugh:

 I was thinking more along the lines of... think she put out for her prom date? ;)

I'm heading home on Wednesday, and will be shooting some prom photos for my little brother who's just finishing high school. Got a few ideas from this, thanks.

Looks like good practice for a wedding shoot. 12-14 all seem a little flat, like there was some kind of haze going across the front of your shot at the time.

I've started to really dislike angles for angles sake... Myspace and all that :o

even though his are a little more exaggerated, they're pretty common in weddings and events like this.

It was a new thing for me. I took a few straight ones and some angled ones. Honestly, it was just nice to have a change of pace and everyone seems to like them. It's jut not quite as boring as normal. Though I did take some normal ones to be safe.

For example, I find 1 a little more interesting than 2.

    No :squint:

 - The 135 is awesome, sell your 85 and purchase it.

    see above.

Yea I agree with the wedding comment. I think this will be good portfolio material for potential clients.

12-14 and a few others were shot DIRECTLY into the sun. the conditions were pretty bad and I figured it would be neat to try. Those were actually the girl's favorite ones

yup, i've never been a huge fan of it, but I liked the way some of these turned out. especially cause every parent there was taking all the same pics from normal angles, I wanted my set to stand out.

I think they all look pretty great. As for the angles - i'm not normally a fan but it seems like kids LOVE to take pictures angled and who is your customer? The kids. I'll bet if you put all the photos in front of them they will pick out the angled ones 9 times out of 10.

If you don't take the Howard Rourke approach to photography, shoot what your client wants and they'll love you and keep coming back.

My comments on the angled shots are purely subjective. and hell, it is good practice for similar events/scenarios.

I like the angled perspective its fun

There is however something that bothers me in some of the group shots. It appears there are two photographers competing for the people's eyes in the pictures.

A little something about what I do, when there are a couple and im the photog I politely ask for others to let me take the picture first then they can, or vice versa depending on how they are. That way you dont have people trying to decide into which camera they are looking.

I don't like the tilting, but I think it was a good choice for this shoot. I can see parents ordering a lot those tilted pics for home/work. I'm sure your smug smug account liked this shoot

You said there were really bad, harsh lighting conditions for the pictures. Were there any settings you had to tweak or other things you had to do differently to get usable results?
