Project: Webring has wrapped up. There's some talented web coders visiting OT CP!

What's this all about? View the project thread.

    The Judging

Use the poll to select the web ring you feel is the best. Some criteria to think about when judging:

    • Design/Style
    • Look/Feel (kind of like design, but more along the lines of how it all flows from one page to the next)
    • Functionality (does it function as a web ring is expected to?)
    • Features
    • Usability
    • Creativity

Feel free to leave questions and/or comments to the coders.

Wow, all of the entries are pretty damn good. I'm not sure which I'll vote for as my fav just yet. ;)

    crotchfruit:
I really liked this one. You have a really clean interface and easy to use site. The "follow this link" with the hash was a nice touch too.

    Divine Vengeance:
A nice and simple user interface. I did have an issue trying to login after I registered. It kept saying all information was required after I entered my details to login. I tried a couple of times with the same results.

    Astro:
As usual, awesome work. The visual aspect could have been better, but the user experience was very good.

    kingtoad:
I thought this one was the best looking overall. I did have a problem after adding my link. After I added my link it shows my information. Since my link is rather long, it didn't all show up in the window. Aside from that, good job.

Thank you! :bigthumb: I had to do a little bit of text formatting and rearanging the layout a bit, but now it supports longer URLs.

I liked all of them....none of them really had a good image to put on your site that would point to a random page. (Which is really what I was thinking of when I suggested a webring in the first place... :dunno: )

EDIT: I guess Astro had this feature....sorry

I think overall this turned out really well. Everyone who participated did a great job. From the looks of it, everyone used PHP (correct me if I'm wrong). No representing for the other languages? :)

    So where to from here?

    -- N O W --

It sounded like there was a genuine interest for an OT web ring. I jumped in this project to do it for giggles, but I'm not overly interested in managing it. So crotchfruit, Divine Vengeance, or kingtoad: If hosting this for all of OT sounds interesting, contact me and I'll escalate this to the others mods and we'll see about making your web ring the official OT web ring (if there's several of you interested, then I'm going to recommend to the mods we let the OT main forum decide the one to go with and if that doesn't work, then we'd go with a vote from all the OT mods - sound good?).

    -- F U T U R E --

Oddly enough, I had fun doing this. I think I spent roughly 8 hours, but it was a fun project and I learned a few new tricks. It sounds like there would be an interest in doing more of these (this true?). If so, it would be interesting to know what level of projects folks would be interested in working on. I'm a huge fan of "practicle" projects. Projects that solve real world problems. I've seen some of the coding challenges that are out there and they're cool, but I'm not able to sink my teeth into it unless I can see a practicle application for it. You guys want to stay practical or jump into some technical projects?

im up for both practicle and technical. they both server great purposes. some people lean to 1 way or another.

maybe our next program can deal with some algorithm design?

Sounds cool, Astro. Whatever is fine.
As much as I would like to participate in future projects, I'm not quite sure if I will be able to, I will definatly try though.. Hehe. I'm starting school again this week and that/work will be taking up a lot of time. Same reason why I kind of crammed this OT Webring in. I took the day off to start it and get most of it done

For technica/Practical... whatever is fine. Would be a good learning experience for all of us imo.

you guys might want to check out the topcoder developer section ( http://www.topcoder.com/?&t=development&c=index ). basically doing "real world proejcts" in a competition format, except that you get paid if you win :eek3:

i tried it once.. found it a little too strict and the project formatting weird.. but you guys might like it better?

Looks pretty intense. I was thinking more along the lines of web development and topcoder.com appears to cater to everything but web dev (unless I missed a section). Lets continue this in a new thread...

Go here to discuss more on the future of coding projects:
    http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?p=13523112#post13523112

Otherwise, we return to our thread already in progress...

This weekend I'm going to get in touch with the CP mods and see about making one of these web rings the official OT web ring. If any of you guys do NOT want to have your web ring be the official OT ring, let me know before the end of this weekend (Oct 12th-ish).
