Im a newbie to the whole hdtv deal, but my dad recently got a progressive scan dvd player and I was expecting it to look at least as good as the HDTV broadcast he gets from the cable company, but for some reason it looks like hes watching a regular dvd. Should the progressive scan be outputting in an HD format? hes using the HD wires but they were cheap ones from sears so could that be the problem? Thanks

No, the cables are almost certainly not the problem.

DVD is not a high resolution format like HDTV broadcasts are. DVD has only 480 vertical progressive lines of resolution, while HDTV has either 720 vertical progressive lines of resolution, or 1080 lines of vertical interlaced resolution. So, in comparison, DVD is quite a bit less.
