I am looking to write a program that will add an option to the ipod menu.
this option will allow the storing of video on the ipod, streaming in from the USB. The ipod does not need to display the video, only store it.

is this possible under the current ipod OS or would this require installing a form of linux?

how feasible is this project for an intermediate programmer?

Please give me any advice or suggestions you have concerning how I would go about completing this project. I apologize if this has been brought up before. Thank you.

I don't believe that Apple has released any sort of SDK or interface into the iPod system. You can look into the linux stuff. I bet they make it pretty easy to add menu items, but video streaming, and building a new installer is not really a intermediate programmer task, you'll need some experience. Not saying that you couldn't figure it out, but it would be a stretch for the average programmer to just dive into.

    Good luck

why cant you just put the file on the ipod? if i understand what you're asking right, you just want to use it to hold the video, right?

i want it to be able to store the video coming in from a camera through the USB. so i would need to write some sort of small program to record and save the bitstream.

So you want to be able to shoot video with a digital camera, and have the iPod as a storage source? Or do you want it to be able to auto d/l the files from the camera based on an action from the ipod?

also needing to install the linux kernel first would make what I'm trying to do less effective, so hopefully that is not the only way.

I am hoping this modification will be easy for someone who knows virtually nothing about their ipod or their computer to be able to install and use. basically i want to package it as an installshield and just let the user click next and have it work.

thank you for the responses so far.

yeah the first one. I want to be able to hook a cheap camera (with no hard drive) up to the ipod and have it store the information coming from the video camera.

the iPod is a *client* device.... you want a *host* device. Not sure you would even be able to program the ipod to do that.

Yeah, the iPod may not have that hardware capability (in fact, I would wager that it doesn't).

For anyone who wants info about coding for the iPod, though, I would suggest taking a look at the RockBox project. They have it ported quite nicely to the iPod and in the process have compiled a fair bit of data about the specifics of the iPod hardware.
