What free programs are out there that will let you set it up so that people can't change the background on a computer or a screen saver?

update: its on a windows ME computer.

Well considering you can just change the file that it points to - if you have access to the location where the background is stored, you're good to go.

Oh and since you can access this is in DOS, you're screwed.

98 doesn't really have policies.. you'll have to attempt to lock it down with roaming profiles..

Uh... so thats why im asking. there are programs out there that only let you run certain programs. and the only program they need to be able to run is internet explorer.

You're better off changing the shell to internet explorer then. But in the end, you have a problem with it not being based on the NT kernal. All of the good internet kiosk programs I've worked with are based off of it.

Ultimately, what are you trying to accomplish here? Instead of solving one specific problem, why not tell us what this computer is to be used for and what spurred these questions?

I've got a client that has a computer in his store that he allows customers to use. Once in awhile he will get a customer that puts up obscene backgrounds or screen savers, and the other day, someone went in and disabled the internet connection (which he didnt know how to re-enable). He just wants to make sure they dont change any of that.

I'd get some off the shelf kiosk program - it has all those features in it.

Or, change the OS to W2K, NT, or XP and research permissions and nail it down.

    Good luck

Cheaper, no - I mostly work with Kingnet (www.kingproducts.com), although good is probably overkill for what you want. Others I have worked with have been in the same vain (deployment of many terminals around the city) so they're big on remote access and of course the commercial side of things.
