Close the lid, it will go to sleep. Now with a Bluetooth or USB keyboard/mouse, you can wake it up.

What do you need the application for again?

i don't have a bluetooth or usb keyboard or mouse. if im downloading something, and it takes a while, i don't really want to leave the lid open, im in college, the laptop might get damaged. leaving the computer not on sleep, but closed would help me a fuckload.

I simply cannot believe that this isn't addressed somewhere in OS X.

It isn't a built-in feature because it creates terrible heat problems if you do it for any appreciable length of time.

I think that if you do it too much it will ruin the screen

the screen won't turn off when you shut the lid??

ahhh, if the computer thinks it will be sleeping when the lid is closed, the screen would turn off anyway.

This is an abnormal request. 99.9% of people who close their lid and use the computer have a KB/Mouse and Monitor hooked up to wake the computer up. I believe that is why it is not addressed in OSX.

I disagree. Say for example you are rendering video for a dvd, this will take 2 or 3 hours and its bedtime. It shouldn’t be a huge issue to just close your labtop and be off to dreamland.
