Hey guys, I'm going to post up a handgun for sale on some forums...however I can't find answers to some of my questions. I'm hoping you guys can help me out. If I list the gun on arf, glocktalk and some others for sale, I have to ship to a FFL dealer obviously. After the buyer and myself agree on a price, what is the procedure from that point? He has the ffl dealer fax a copy of their license to me, then I ship overnight to ffl dealer and call it a day?

Never sold a gun online, and just don't want to do anything wrong. Also, I know not to deal with anyone from CA since the gun has 3 mags w/ 15rd capacity and a 30rd mag. Is there a website I can check to make sure the buyer is from a state that allows >10rd mags?

    Thanks

You have it correct. You have to ship overnight to FFL and make sure you have a copy of their FFL license. The buyer sends you funds before you ship. Then, once it's sent the deal is out of your hands essentially.

The only source I could think of is www.packing.org.

Make sure the copy is signed. My dealer won't ship unless the copy is signed. I'm guessing that's part of the law. Most of his business is through gunbroker.

The dealer that sends it to you should sign it. At least, that's how I've done it the two times I've done online transactions. Then you give the copy and gun to your dealer.

I would suggest you not just cast away the California market. If the handgun you wish to sell is approved for sale in California simply don't ship the >10 magazines with it.

Be sure to have the buyer ask his dealer if they'll accept transfers from a private party (many won't) and if they'll want something like a copy of your DL to come with it.

To the best of my knowledge you're not required to get a copy of the dealers license, signed or not. You can use the atf's ez-check system to veryify the shipping addresses matching the dealer's license number and I think you'd be gold. You're also not required by law to ship overnight to a license holder. You also can't mail handguns by the USPS without a ffl.

I typically call the FFL as well...to make sure they are expecting this.

Ok, I got the FFL number and verified it on the atf website. I planned on shipping UPS next day. I guess I'll call the ffl tomorrow and make sure they accept shipments from private parties. If not, I guess I have to ship it out via a ffl dealer in my area. I'm assuming when the buyers ffl gets ahold of the gun everything is cleared out of my name as far as the registration. Is there anything I need to sign..or just drop it and ship it?

Hmm. Here is what the buyer sent me when I asked if the ffl needed to send me a fax of his license. I checked the number he provided and it came up on the atf website.

Works for me. My FFL will not send a copy of his ffl to non ffl's, however
    > the link I provided along with his number will allow you to verify he is a

Does this sound right? Never did this before and don't want to mess up.
