    windows xp (home or pro)
    windows 2000 pro
both computers are in the same work group
both computer have file and printer sharing set up

hmmm, i think that if you're not in a Domain environment, that when connecting to your other computer, it automatically uses the guest account. You can do a couple of things.

1.) Enable the guest account on both computers (probably a good idea to assign it a password)

2.) If you are using user authentication on the computer you are signed in as (ie. you enter a password when windows boots up) then, you need to give that user exclusive access to the share you are trying to access.

    Hope this helps :)
