    I found something about this

L <error> ... The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started,
but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The two-digit error
codes indicate the type of problem. (See also section "Disk error
codes".) This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry
mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters, see section "Disk geometry").

There's your problem -- use GRUB.

    Another vote for grub.

We need info about the disk that the /boot partition is on, size, age, etc.

yea i only have 1 hdd and no os except the one i am trying to install (redhat 9.0)

had nothing to do with lilo, wouldnt start with grub either, i reinstalled it a few times didnt work

then i installed windows xp, and formated it and installed red hat 9.0 works now

maybe i should just have formated it again but i thought linux installation does it

so everything works now.... thx anyway

If the boot fails you can work on it right then and there, instead of going and finding a rescue disk.
