I purchased a module of 256MB SDRAM for my dell dimension l866r. When I installed it and turned on my computer nothing happened. When I re-install on old RAM it boots right up. Now i'm pretty sure I got the right RAM.
    I went to crucial.com and it said I needed SDRAM, PC133 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz • 3.3V • 32Meg x 64 . The RAM I purchased is SDRAM 32x64 PC133 168 pin.

Does anybody know whats going on? Did I miss something?

Did you buy the ram from Crucial or did you go to a store or some other site and try to get what crucial said you needed? If #2, don't do that. You bought the wrong ram. Computers can be very picky about RAM and older ones often don't like newer ram even though you think it should work. If you bought it from Crucial and it doesn't work, then you may have just gotten a bad stick because I've never had them ship me an imcompatible piece of ram.

    what processor do you have?

And never ever buy ram (or any other computer component) from best buy. Besides getting ripped a new one on the price, you didn't even get a good brand.

Most likely, yes. Your motherboard may have some requirement like single sides/double sided, or some dram density limit that doesn't get listed in a generic description like "PC133, CAS2, 64Mbyte"

P3 is like saying you drive a Toyota... Well what is it? 500? 933EB? etc.

Bare with me, I don't know a lot about computers... if you already haven't noticed.

    Intel Pentium 3 863 MHz

I wouldn't say to *never* buy from Best Buy, you can get some pretty good deals but you have to know what to look for. With a lot of the cheaper RAM there are motherboard incompatibilities that you have to look out for, so for that reason RAM is one thing you shouldn't skimp on for brand.

It sounds to me like you got the right type of ram, try swapping the slots (you have 2?) I doubt you'd get BB to take the RAM back unless you said it was faulty.

Bestbuy took it back with no questions. I got some kenwood speakers for my car and the first season of ATHF :) I'm going to order the correct RAM from crucial this week.
