So, I have a PC running XP MCE2005 + SP3, a laptop running Vista and an XBox360. Both are running WMP11. On the PC, when I set it to share media I see the laptop and my 360 and set them both to be allowed. Neither the laptop or the 360 can see the media I'm sharing from my PC.

I did try pinging from the laptop to the PC and vice versa. What is odd is that from the PC, I can ping the laptop. From the laptop though, I get "destination unreachable" instead of the typical "request timed out."

This was all working not too long ago, but I haven't used it in a little bit. So, I'm not sure which change (if any) may have caused this to stop working.

Oh, and before pothead starts pissing and moaning, I'm trying to share a bunch of videos I took of my son with my digital camera. It is just easier showing my family on the TV instead of the PC. So, I'm not doing this for any sort of illegal activity.

make sure file sharing is enabled in the firewall, and you have simple file sharing turned off.

when I have a xbox360 on my home network, my pc pops up a bubble in the lower right of the screen saying that it found a new extender.

i'm not using any MCE media extenders. i was just using WMP11 media sharing because it allows for streaming Divx files. i guess i can just convert the MJPEG files from my digi cam to WMP instead, but at this point i had converted so many to Divx.

from another note, i also tried sharing a folder and that doesn't seem to be working either. i can't even connect to the PC.

anyway, i disabled simple file sharing as you recommended. and the exceptions listed in windows firewall for windows media player network sharing service cover 10280-10284 (udp) and 10243 (tcp).

ok, so i've verified that file and print sharing is selected in the network configuration tab for my network connection. i also verified that in the windows firewall there is an exception for file and print sharing which allows tcp ports 139 and 445 and udp ports 137 and 138 for this subnet (both systems are in the same subnet, i have my router configured for a class-c and the last octet is 144 on the PC and 145 on the laptop).

try pinging one machine from the other, and then check `arp -a` again and see if there's an entry for it, then.

strangely enough, once i ping from the PC to the laptop i can then ping back from the laptop to the PC for a short while. after a little bit though, it stops working again and goes back to "destination host unreachable." there is also no reference to it in the arp cache again.

if that doesn't work you need to eliminate wireless from this equation

Put them on a switch or use a crossover cable to diag the issue.

yeah, that didn't work. i'll try the switch thing tomorrow. it is too late to be moving that shit around.

just on a whim, i'm going to try reloading the drivers for my wireless card. this thing is fairly old and busted.

luckily, the media sharing is working fine from my laptop to my xbox. so, if i can just get these videos to the laptop at least i can watch them from there.

yeah, no good with the driver reload either.

any idea if SP3 could have done anything to cause this? my wife said it has been a while since she played any of those videos and that was the last major change that i can remember.

May be a stupid question, but did you try setting up the home/small office network? I was going crazy figuring out a similar problem, and the first step I should have done, I skipped lol

    Wirelessly posted via wap.offtopic.com (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) BlackBerry8703e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Well, this was all an existing network that I had for years with at the bare minimum file shares. Then, when I got my 360 a few months ago I added the wmp11 media sharing. Neither works now, though file sharing works for a little bit after I ping from my pc. Otherwise, it is a void on the network. I'm going to try going hard wired when I get home.
