I've been reading a few articles about private domain registration, and how if you don't hide your info on WhoIs, you'll get tons of spam and be in danger of ID theft.

    How important is private registration?

If private registration exists, seems like the rule about requiring your contact info on WhoIs is pretty dumb.

I kept reading a few more articles -

What do you think of <1and1.com>? They have the best price for domain registration with private registration included. But lots of people don't like them - don't know why.

I would like to make shit up, but the domain I'm setting up is suppose to be a good website for helping the world and stuff.

Anyone know of any registrars with good price on domain and private registration?

Godaddy charges $8 for the private registration itself. Google charges $10 for domain and private registration, but I don't know enough about google...

    Thanks.

i don't bother with private registration, that is just me

they only spam i have gotten from doing this is shit about getting my sites/businesses in a directory

i don't see how it can lead to too much identity theft, your ss number is not listed

and for making shit up, i have heard it is easier to steal domains with shit made up

so you hear shit about regular registration and making shit up on it

Namecheap has whoisguard for 5 domains for $8/yr, worth it, I'd say.

Yeah, I was just looking at namecheap.

From random threads I googled, it seems namecheap is pretty dependable/honest. They don't come with the loads of extras that Godaddy does, but very cheap for just domain name registration.

Namecheap has really cheap hosting too, any thoughts on their hosting?

Cheap hosting is cheap hosting. It doesn't really matter where you get it, it's equally shitty but good enough for normal people.

Private registration is good to keep your address/phone # private. Before I went to private registrations on my domains, I got a lot of junkmail and phone calls about various web related crap.

The big difference between private registration and fake whois info, is that the real info IS on file with the registrar, only the public whois is different. Fake info is grounds for loosing a domain technically, what if someone tells ICANN or your registrar, your registrar ties to phone or mail you something... you never get it... and lose the domain.

I pay $8/year per domain for private reg, well worth it to me.
