I've got a cool pic taken at the max resolution on my A70 (2048x1536) How large of a print can i make without losing quality? Where would be a good place to get the print done at?

Another question, I'm going to be getting either a new Rebel XT (8.2? MP) or an original 300D... (probably the XT..) anyways, what are the max sizes I can print out on those?

probably 8x10 with the A70 and 16 x 20 to 20 x 30 for the rebels depending on how you proccess and how you have it printed

I read that for smaller pictures, like less than 8x10, you should have the DPI at about 300. For larger prints, you can bring it down, because you won't be looking at the picture so close. So for a 20x30, like 150-200 dpi

If I want to make 20x30 prints, photoshop will have to resample the image. Will that be a problem? Have you made prints that size before?

With my 20D, 12x8 is at 292 DPI, 3504x2336 without any resampling

so i would have to print larger ones (20x30 which is probably the biggest i would ever print) at a lower DPI? how do i prep the images to be printed, or will the printing shop do that?

anyone have any sugggestions on printing shops to go to?

yea best way to get them that big is to use some sort of intorpolation other then photoshops default one, be it the stair step method, or genuine fractals they all do a pretty similar job, i use a variation on stair step, just google it if you want infor about it

if used it to make prints up to 32x44 from my D70, when done right the prints look amazing

D70s image size is 3000x2000 or 10x6 roughly, ill just use photoshops resize for anything 11x17 or smaller

Because you took them in jpg mode. When I convert RAW files in photoshop, it gives me the option of choosing the DPI I want.

You can change the DPI if you want, just be sure to uncheck resample image

ah, so the highest quality jpegs the camera takes arent really 8mp?

I hate having to deal with the raw images.

how big can those 72dpi jpegs be printed?

Resolution and DPI are different things. They are 8 megapixels, because there is 3504x2336 pixels in the image. But at 72 DPI, there are 72 dots per inch. 3504/72 = 48 inches. So it'll print big, but you'll be able to see the pixels up close. If you change the DPI in photoshop without resampling, you can get an 8x12 print at 292 DPI. That's coming straight from the camera, and will look real sharp. The photo lab I went to had a Fuji Frontier and I guess 300 DPI is what they want the images set to.

    thanks for clarifying that.

I just hate processing the raw images, since I cannot get the cannon .CR2 files to open in photoshop (I can only open them with the EOS viewer, which I am having trouble using)

You'll need 2.4 version of the RAW plugin for photoshop to process them. I used to hate RAW too, but not having to worry about white balance while shooting is awesome. I might be different, but I enjoy post processing :dunno:

I installed that plugin, but I still cant get the cr2 files to open in photoshop.

when I go to the camera through my computer, I cant see the files either (and I have hide hidden files and folders unchecked)

The ONLY way I can see the raw images is through the EOS viewer utility :(

    Any ideas?

you don't have the newest plug in that supports your camera yet. Cr2 files are files that can't be read, crw files are proper raw files, just download the newest plug in

I got the 2.4 plugin that says it should support the 20D I have no clue what I am doing wrong here. I installed the plugin like the directions said.
