at the art show today, a met a guitar/bass duo that plays mostly bars and does a mix of covers and originals. they want me to come out to their show at a bar tomorrow night and take photos.

    they want:
    a few of the singer/guitarist
    a few of the bassist
a few of both of them

    will use for:
    myspace
    flyers
    promo stuff

    will cost me:
an hour at most at the bar and a few beers
    an hour or two PP
however much a blank CD costs

What the heck do I charge? I was thinking to just do the pics then give them the CD with rights to do whatever they want w/ the images. what do you think? and what should I charge for this?

I've done band promo shots before, but for free. One of the bands I shot used my image as the inside of their latest CD.

I wouldn't do it for less than 300. There's a few of them, 300 is like 50 bucks each (unless it's JUST them two). Besides people if you sell your work for cheap, it looks bad on you.

there are just 2. I get a feeling they're not expecting to pay a lot. I would honestly rather do it for less than I should, than not do it at all.... that's IF they have a problem with prices.

I was thinking $100 w/ $20 due at time of signing the contract?

bump.... is $100 fair for 2 people? 15 shots total on a CD with unlimited use (provided they give me credit for electronic usage)

I would say $200 for the whole thing.

    They're paying for:

    Your equipment
    Your software
    Your training
    Your time

Don't sell yourself short. You put in the effort to learn how to shoot/edit. There is a lot that is going to go into this 'small' shoot. Think about how long its going to take to get to the location, take the pics, edit the pics and then deliver.

If they want a proper job done, then that's what they'll pay for.

As far as usage, I would give them limited usage (just for myspace/flyers). That's with giving you credit too :o

    Ok, fair enough.

how about usage for any web advertising (includes myspace and other band music sites) and for print usage on flyers

if they are the type of band you describe, I'm willing to bet their photo budget is exactly $0. Price accordingly.

heh yea... I called up the front man today and we settled on $150 for 15 photos... and I get to put my name/watermark on all of the images (per his request - says it looks "cooler"). affordable for him and totally cool with me. he told me they'll be needing some non-live promo shots done soon, so I'll do a good job with these and hopefully do some more biz with them soon

    UPDATE:

Exchanged photos for money tonight. Guy who hired me was really happy and promised to give me a call when they get a full band together. I ended up giving him way more than 15 shots because they were good and wanted to make a great impression.

Hooray for my first official paid job! No more free favors!

My fav. shots are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/flibbajabba/sets/72157614398049832/
The lighting at the venue SUUUUCKED, but I got a good lighting formula going eventually...

Thanks for your advice, OTAP :h5:

Looks like you went the right route. Cut the broke guys a break at this point, for future business, and chances at greater returns in the long run.
