Hey guys, looking at some powerbooks on ebay right now. Next semester I'm going to need a laptop for all the essays I'm going to write. Obviously, it can become my portable audio player as well, but I'm curious, how is the quality of the sound card output? Can you get good volume and low distortion with high quality circumaural headphones like Grado's, Senn's, etc.? For some reason it seems the soundcard on the pb would be better than the output of an ipod ...

If you want good sound quality, stick to vinyl and some high-end headphones.

If you want portability and 10,000 songs then an iPod will do you fine.

its decent. but i use an external USB soundcard (m-audio sonica), its a bit cleaner, and run that to an external headphone amp. not so portable though, thats what the ipod is for (also with an amp).

I use the headphone output of my Tascam FW-1884 which communicates with my powerbook via firewire :hsugh:

what most people don't know about the 15" and 17" powerbooks is that the built in headphone connector has an optical out built into it

optical cable -> reciever = best sound quality
