I have a few questions about the 15 inch powerbooks (pref. with the 1.67 processor) what is your battery life running normal programs/surfing the web? If anyone uses Final Cut Pro does it kill the battery time or not much difference? Is it OK to use it while sitting on your lap or will the extra heat kill the powerbook (dont wanna risk anything, it happened with my toshiba notebook)

If anyone has any comments about it for every day use and video editing they would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the 15" 1.25ghz and under heavy use i get an hour.
I played World of Warcraft wirelessly with a bluetooth keyboard and USB mouse for 1hour till i noticed it was unplugged and it gave me a warning about needing to be plugged in.

use the thing however you want.

put it on your laptop, or on a couch.

    the heat wont matter.

ive had my 12inch 867 for over 2 years now and the thing hasnt had one problem and ive dropped it twice.

try not to drop it, but if you do, it doesnt really matter

i know nothing about final cut and battery life.

im guessing it would run the battery down faster though because it is a memory intensive program.

I haven't used my PB under "heavy" conditions when its not plugged in, but I get about 3 hours of battery time under normal use so far. I can't complain at all.

Using Final Cut will probably eat up the battery a little faster than say just doing websurfing, but not nearly as much as watching a DVD. I get about 2 hours battery life under normal usage on my 1GHz TiBook.

    Hey Guys-

I'm not trying to start an argument or be a jerk, but don't PC's get more battery time on their laptops? I really want to get a powerbook for college (the 12 in with the superdrive).. but the battery thing is kinda keeping me down...

True, but how much does a baterry from Apple cost?
Just one thing i like about Pc's alot is the expansion slot, so you could have 2nd battery's running at the same time.. not a big deal but just a nice conveniance..

I really like the powerbooks now, espc the way they look and hope they change the appearance atleast of them, atleast till the middle of summer (when i plan to buy one).. i can't wait, just hope the transition from pc, to apple is a nice one..

i can get about 3-3.5hr from my 12" PB with just internet surfing and chatting. with doing some java programming (compiling and running) its more like 2.5-3hr's. if i dim the monitor i can get even more time out of it.

and as for PC batteries lasting longer, fuck no...

Brightness turned down as low as possible (and still visible) with light use yields my friend's roommate 5.5-6 hours :eek3:.

Wow... my 1.25 15" Powerbook only gives me like 1.75 hours with normal use (Airport, full screen brightness). How are you guys getting 3 hours? :hs:

If I turn my brightness all the way down to the first box and turn off Airport, I can get ~5 hours.

My 15 inch 1.25 PB used to get ~3.5 hours of use when the battery was brand spanking new. In the past, oh, 17 months, I have used the laptop on battery quite a bit, and it now only gets ~1.5 hours of use using bluetooth mouse and WIFI (this is occasionally compiling stuff in MATLAB and Xcode).

My experience is that PC laptop battery life numbers are like EPA mileage estimates... I.E. best possible scenario, but not something you would actually get in any sort of real-world situation. I think in the real world, PCs and Macs get about the same battery life. If you're looking to sit through 7 hours of class and never run out of battery, then you're gonna need a second battery no matter what laptop you buy. As for price, they're no more expensive than PC batteries. Buy them (new, duh) on eBay if you want to save some money.
