worry less about the total watts and more about who makes the actual PSU. A generic $20.00 600W power supply is easily beaten by a 350w PSU made by a reputable company.

What else do you have in the box?

A celeron with a couple drives and a cheap video card, all you'd need really would be 250w.

there's some sites that list a rough estimate of how much powre each device uses. just add them up and you have a ballpark figure.

Watts aren't everything...In fact, the majority of 500W PSU's are absolute shit.

I personally am a fan of ThermalTake's TR-2 430w PSU...It's cheap, $40, it has a 24/20 pin connector, SATA, and PCI-E graphics connectors. It's also exceptionally silent and stable.

I use them for nearly every build config because they are such great non-bullshit power supplies.

But the rest of ThermalTake's lineup is woefully overpriced.

By the way, my system, although not power hungry, is close. I run a 3200+ XP and an X800XL AGP. The X800XL ain't that bad (No worse than the 9700 Pro it replaced), but the 3200+ hogs power.
