I'm putting in a new stereo in my 85 CJ7 and am having power supply problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

when I turn on the ignition the head unit (alpine) turns on and goes through its brief startup. after about 3 seconds it shuts off, waits about a second and starts all over again. this behaviour repeats repeats repeats.

My voltage gauge is bouncing on about the same cycle between 12.5v and 10.5v (even when the car is running). when I pull the wires off and put a voltmeter on the wires I get a steady 12.65 though.

It seems like I am getting messy power to the head unit which is causing it to start/stop/start and the analog power gauge shows the same. However when I put a digital power gauge I get a steady reading. WTF!

If I hook the headunit up straight to the battery is works just fine. Tell me what to do!!! Thanks!:x:
