    Two words: structural balance.

Your volume of the exercises on the left side of the chart should be at least equal to (in most cases, greater than) the exercises on the right side.

I did shoulder presses, a tri-set of front, side, and rear delt raises, upright rows, and two types of shrugs and my shoulder/traps blew up in no time.

I used to do upright rows.. but after I started reading some serious articles against it, I dropped it from routine.

Hit yourself in the face with a hammer while listening to death metal and doing shoulder raises. Oh and make sure you take an animal pak before you hit the gym.

    That would be pretty "hardcore"

I dont think upright rows are such a bad thing as long as you dont try and max out on them along with pulling to your forehead

"If there's one exercise that'll ever push me over the line, it's going to be the upright row. This is as internally rotated as the humerus will get, and you're elevating the humerus right into the impingement zone on every rep. For that reason, I'll never write upright rows into a program. The dumbbell version is a slightly safer alternative, although I feel that there are still much safer ways to challenge the upper traps and deltoids. To summarize, if you've ever had a shoulder problem or are at risk, you'd be wise to omit upright rows altogether." -Eric Cressey
