    Hi Folks,

To my surprise, I have discovered quite a few friends that want portrait shots for fun/work and a few that want pics of their pets :mamoru:.

Anyway, I have only really used my SB-600 bounced for shots. I realize that is less than ideal.

What is the best way to shoot with a single speedlight? Should I go commander and set it at a 45 to my left or right and use the onboard for some fill?

Curious if anyone else had this situation once before getting better lighting.

Extra question: How much more would a 2nd sb-600 help with just a stoffen on it? I don't have money for umbrellas. Hell I don't have money for a 2nd sb-600 either

Check out the strobist blog. You'll find lots of tips and tricks for using your flash off camera (position, different difusers, etc). http://strobist.blogspot.com/

For what they want, you have the right equipment. They'll be satisfied with snap shots, I'm sure you can provide something like that.

Commander mode, lightstand, and small softbox (or hell even a hung white cloth with the light shooting into it) will provide you with a key light and a fill. That is plenty for portraits. How you use it is entirely up to you.

Forget about gear based setups for a minute.

How do you want to present these animals?

    Bright, cheery, airy?
    Dramatic, deep shadows, black background?
Shallow low dof, softly side lit (window key)?
    Quirky close-up dramatic angle, underlit?

Figure out the look you want to present, and the lighting requirements follow naturally and become obvious.

Rather than asking about a pre-canned light setup.

If you want that, sure, diffused key at 45, fill on the other 45 at -2 stops under.
It'll be off camera light, but it'll still look like a crappy canned snapshot, just with some directional light thrown in.

IMO, you should definitely invest in some wireless triggers. It made a world of difference for me.

If money is your concern, buy a cheap shoot through umbrella, umbrella holder and lightstand. Since you're doing this for free, have fun and experiment. Try with and without the umbrella.

Like someone already said, watch the OneLight DVD.

one light dvd + ebay shoot through umbrella + stand + triggers is def the cheapest route for something decent looking.

I'm using eBay umbrellas and stands. Getting some new mounts tomorrow in the mail. Just got my second SB600 and my second cybersync receiver is coming in tomorrow as well.
