Went out around campus last night and too some portraits of my room mate's sister and her friend, I was having allot of trouble focusing. Here are a few of them, it was my first time taking portraits, and I think night made it exceedingly difficult to focus correctly, or get what I wanted.

You really need some additional lights for portraits if you're gonna shoot at night. None of these are really any good.

Are you taking portraits? Or pictures of things at night with people around them? These are definitely not what I would consider "portrait" work.

Definitely was trying for portraits, but looking at it now, and thinking back, It turned into things at night with people around them. So, I am thinking I need to tighten up on the subject I am trying to take the portrait of correct?

Well, its all up to you. One thing I try to stay away from is saying that you HAVE to do this or you HAVE to do that. I will say though that the classical definition of a "portrait" will be much closer than what you have taken and generally show a fair amount of detail in a face.

    You mean snapshots?

They're either soft, poorly composed, grimaced expression or underexposed. And the white balance is off on pretty much all of them.

    1. Boom, lights. Girls are under exposed and very soft.
    2. Soft, camera shake, goofy unnatural expression. She wasn't doing that on her own.
    3. Soft and I don't even know of they have eyes.
    4. Soft.
    5. WTF are they looking at in two different directions? You did NO favors to the one on the left in this one. Soft.
    6. Too much distracting background, unnatural poses.
    7. Most potential here, but soft and poorly composed.
    8. SOFT.
    9. People don't do well outside of the DOF unless you have a lens that can turn them to cream, you do not.
    10. What'd I just tell you? And an awkward angle.

What do you think would be better compositions for seven, I know it is all subjective, but I would like your opinion.

I think your subjects need to act like they are enjoying it... or be confident in their actions/looks.

This "subjective", POTN-esque business is a load of shit. Great photos look great to everyone.

I would have gotten low, much lower, like stomach on the ground low and filled the frame with the stairs, it'd give them a much grander look and feel and removed the negative space at the top. I would have gotten them to get comfortable while I "set up" until they started talking naturally and I would have started shooting.

I would have also made damn sure that I was directly on center with the stairs, having that massive straight line in the middle of the frame is going to look super sloppy if it isn't dead on. And I would have done a fair bit of work in PS to even out the lights, remove any distracting elements and brightened the girls up to stand out from the frame more than they do now.

Thx, I went back out today with some different girls, I think ti went tons better, I feel that allot of the reason for the not so great photos was the complete and total lack of lighting allot of where I was that night.

    I appreciate everyones comments!:bigthumb:
