I am taking a photography class. The next assignment will be portraits. I'm guessing most people in the class will just be doing portraits of friends around campus.

I want to do something that will invoke a little more emotion and make more of an impact on someone and am brainstorming ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking about doing something highlighting homelessness (portraits and some blurbs from homeless people in San Francisco or Santa Cruz) but I am worried that this is done often.

    Any help?

Theme your portraits around the stresses of school. Try to catch students doing shit that most people so not associate with college e.g., depression, drugs, theft, steroids, and so on. It would be a tough subject, but one that has always interested me. :dunno:

the homeless thing is gay and overdone. Every first year college photo student tries that same thing out.

    Seriously. every. single. one.

    ^^^all these are excellent ideas.

I hate homeless grab n' run "portraits" ...smacks of exploitation
different if you sit down, talk, document his history, etc. but no one does that.

If I did the homelessness portraits, I would get together with a friend and give out brown bag lunches and talk to them so I could include some information about them with the photo.

Thanks for the other ideas too, keep em coming!

I agree the homeless thing is done often, but you have a winning project if you stop and document one man, who happens to be homeless.

sit down and talk to the guy. make it about him.
show the various aspects of his life.

    - the heartbreaking reality of his present. The decrepit squalor.

    - then show something that visualises him as a child, what he wanted to be (fireman, doctor, etc)

    - bonus sentimentality points to you if you can photograph the dignity of the man. Despite the current surroundings/situation, he remains unbroken and retains a philosophical outlook on life.

Like him feeding birds, or handing food to another man. Or shaking hands with someone. Something like that.

The key is connecting with / caring about your subject as an individual. So it doesn't come off as exploitation.

If you do all this well, I challenge the teacher not to give you an A. Even if only out of personal shame.
