I'm going to go with a velvet background since you can get it cheap on ebay and was wondering what colors I should go for. I'll probably get 3-4 colors. This is just for shooting friends.

if you're just getting a couple colors, I'd get a gray, white, black, and maybe a blue.

Black velvet is going to basically absorb all light, so don't expect to see any detail.

With the white background you can blow it out long with your subject for a high key look.

Watch our metering with white or black though, make sure to meter off your models face, otherwise it'll be badly under/over exposed

Curious - If you are looking for these things on Ebay, what do you type in to search for?
