Police said they confronted the 33-year-old man at about 5:45 p.m. Monday evening. Police said the man had been firing his machine gun into the air in front of a Radio Shack on Hillside Avenue. Witnesses told police the man was walking west on Hillside when he opened fire. The man was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital where his condition is unknown. One witness at the scene said he heard seven gunshots around the time the shooting was reported to have taken place. "It was 'Pow! Pow! Pow!,'" said witness Vincent Ho, who said he was at the dentist's office when he heard the gunfire. "All of the sudden, I heard shots. Everybody was running." Police said they followed the man behind the Radio Shack, exchanging gunfire with him, but no officers were hit. The shooting caused roads to be closed around the area, creating traffic problems. Police sealed off the avenue right in the middle of rush hour, which stacked up a dozen buses, leaving many unable to get home. Police said they recovered the machine gun. The shooting remains under investigation. Lawrence Mordaunt said the shooting shattered the calm of the improving section of Queens, where Hollis and Jamaica Estates meet. "A very good neighborhood," Mordaunt said. "Nothing of this magnitude, ever." I am calling BS machine guns are illegal in NY. So this can not happen.
