i just wiped my HD clean and installed a fresh copy of XP...before i connected to the internet i installed norton firewall and antivirus..then hooked up to the net and updated all the virus stuff. Anyway, already ive got those pop ups that look like a windows alert/system message and it tells ya to goto some registry fix site or something. Anyway, how do i get rid of those

    remove ALL norton products.

    install AVG
    install Spybot S&D
    install Adaware
    install MS Anti-Spyware

    run all scans

so does this free AVG actively watch for virus's and attacks on my computer? Or is there a firewall other than my norton internet security that i should use?

You need a router - STAT!

Even if you only own one computer, it is still recommended that you use one.

Because if we've learned anything over the past few years, Windows is always having new security threats pop up every few weeks. These threats are more often fixed after someone has abused them. A hardware firewall will protect you a lot better because until you actively connect to the internet, no one can access your computer. However, if you leave your computer open to internet and powered on, who knows what's coming down the pipe.
