So I just saw that Amazon.com has the release date for the k10d posted as Nov. 20th. I was hoping it would have been Nov. 1st. I'm not sure I really want to wait another full month to get a camera.

In truth, i'm all over the place. I started out wanting the Sony because I already own a ton of Minolta glass.

Then I saw the high iso pics...

Then I went over to wanting the D80, and still like this camera....

Then I read up on the k10d, and it sounds like it's going to be a beast. All of the best options put together in one kit, and with the reviews on image quality the other pentax dslr's were getting, I thought I found a great camera.

    so... thoughts?

My budget for this year is $1500. This includes all lens options and memory, and preferrably a cable release.

I will have more $$ to spend in February.

    gimme what you got!

    pentax? no thanks.

get either the 400 or 20d. Depending on what your needs are. i.e. do you REALLY need more than 8.2MP, or how fast you need the shutter fps to be, etc.

The more resolution you buy, the better the lens you need. Keep that in mind when you spend $900+ on a body, leaving <$600 on a lens... there aren't that many in that range that will do the sensor justice, other than a few good primes.

    thanks for the thought Hsubaru,

I plan on purchasing either one good lens or the kit lens and a prime right now, then adding pro level lenses on a slow pace. I'd do this no matter which camera I went with.

Which is a shame, because I already have a ton of good glass for the Minolta, but I could never own a sony camera with a straight face.

    Sled,

why the pentax hate? brand loyalty? Check out the K10d. The specs and potential for the thing are amazing. Not to mention, the older Pentax cameras were considered by many to have the best image quality in their class, by far.

Right now, I'm open for any and all suggestions as to the decision I make here. I plan on sticking to whatever brand I choose now, so my future lens purchases will be a large factor in which way I go.

As far as my 'needs'... I suppose I really don't have any. I do need the camera to be able to produce file that can turn into a 16x20 or larger print, I do want as many options and technology advantages as I can get, and I do want something that will allow me to shoot pro quality images in all situations.

While I may not be a pro, I do hold myself and my work to a certain standard...

thanks for the input! This is driving me nuts!

a camera you don't have and are waiting to be released will ALWAYS give worse images than a camera you own right now.

wow... just because a bastard brand is about to rival the monopoly there sure is alot of hate. I wonder if this will change as soon as reviews come out for the k10d.

  9. 400d if you simply MUST have 10mp

low - I don't 'need' 10mp. Just thought that along with the 10mp, improvements in high iso shooting and speed would benefit me as well. Typically, with digital/computer devices newer=better. It's not very often you see companies take a step back with newer products.

With that said, why the 400d. They got rid of it's top mounted lcd screen. bastards.

What do you use? 20d or 30d? Any complaints?

It's not anything against pentax specifically, I'm sure specs wise it's a great camera, but unless you are experienced with purchasing equipment, accessories, etc, then you don't really understand why professional photographers stick to the major brands: Canon/Nikon. The body you buy is going to have VERY little to do with the quality of pictures you take. It's all about the glass, and nobody has better lenses than canon/nikon. Just my .02

oh, and since the nikon is winning, I did some research...

I've found the d80 with the 18-70 for $1279. I am looking at the 18-70 because I hear it's leagues better than the 18-55 (bythom and dpreview both say so....)

    Thoughts on that?

How is the 18-55 lens that comes with the 30d? I've found that kit for $1274. Is it worth getting? If not, which lens >$400 would you replace it with?

    Good point.

However, according to Pentax, their digital cameras can work with EVERY lens that Pentax has ever released.

There has to be some pro quality glass somewhere out there.

But I do understand what you're saying.

Do you really think it'll matter if I plan on sticking to the high end consumer/low end pro level?

I can't ever see myself spending over $1k for a piece of glass.

Depends on what you want out of your photog career, or if you're just having fun. You can take "pretty good" pics with lenses less than $1k, but especially with a telephoto lens, you'll spend at least a grand on a decent lens.

Yeah, the price tag of a lens dictates photo quality. These threads crack me up.

If you have a ton of Minolta glass, you're choice is limited unless you want to invest in a new system. Sony for you.

    I bought the d80 with the 18-70.

I can't use a sony with a straight face, and I prolly would have bought the Pentax if they would have kept up with the competition and released the camera now.

I can't wait til end of Nov. beginning of Dec. for a camera that is untested and unproven.

i think it'll be a fantastic camera too...

The D80 is a great camera. There are too many tech geeks out there that nerd all over the numbers and what gadgets it may or may not have. Bottom line, given a good lens, it takes really good pictures, and is easy to use.

    thanks senecito,

I appreciate the advice you gave me in the other thread.

i decided I wanted to stick with Nikon glass instead of the Tamron, but I believe the 18-70 to be a pretty good piece.

I think it'll start me off well.
