Police: Men fired AK-47 at deputy

08:32 AM CDT on Monday, September 3, 2007

    By Adrienne M. Cody / 11 News

    Raw video from the scene

Four men are in custody, accused of firing at an off-duty Harris County deputy with an AK-47.

The assault rifle is illegal to possess.

Around 11:30 p.m. Sunday the men were in a truck when they pulled over on a bridge on Aldine Mail Route. The off-duty deputy was working security and in uniform at an industrial business on East Hardy.

"Some males, we believe, were joyriding, drinking -- took shots into the general direction of the deputy," Harris County Sheriff's Department spokesman Mario Quintanilla said.

The deputy took cover and called for help, giving police a description of the vehicle. Other deputies in the area pulled the truck over.

Quintanilla said another smaller calibur handgun was found in the suspects' truck.

The deputy wasn't hit or hurt.

"He believes there were at least 10 to 12 shots," Quintanilla said.

So when did Tx pass an assault weapon ban? :dunno:

Houston may have strict gun laws. The state does not. I am not sure of the houston crowd though. Maybe Fazle can let us know?

Pretty sure no bans exist in any cities/counties in Tx, pretty sure its just an ignorant reporter, or perhaps quoting and a ignorant cop.

    it was a polite email?

just said that there were no laws in texas, or federally that prevented the ownership of a rifle that accepts hicap magazines.

also said its not an "assault weapon"

i can be nice :eek3: it just usually gets me nowhere. being an ass is much more fun too.

I think the clarification needs to be added that, if he had a full-auto, genuine AK-47, that it is illegal to possess, without proper license.

I know for a fact that Houston doesn't outlaw semi-auto AK's. When I was there for the meet back in June, I went shooting with fuct, and he had two: the AK-74 which I bought from him and an AK-47. There's no AW ban in Houston or TX.

I am in Houston and just bought 2 WASRs last year myself. One as a gift and one is loaded in my closet.

    From my cold dead hands!

Pretty sure in TX it is illegal for city or county governments to make gun laws stricter than the states.

You dont need a license to possess a full auto AK, unless it's a pre or post may dealer sample.
