RAVENNA, Ohio — An Ohio sheriff says deputies are in a standoff with a former police chief accused of firing a shot at his adult son.

Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley told the [Kent-Ravenna] Record-Courier on Wednesday that former Ravenna police chief Michael Swartout has numerous firearms in his house and refuses to come out. The paper reports that Swartout told deputies if they try to enter "there will be a conflict."

The sheriff's office says the events began Tuesday evening when Swartout fired at his son but missed, striking a vehicle instead. Officials say the standoff began overnight and that deputies have an arrest warrant for felonious assault.

Swartout resigned as police chief in 1998 after pleading guilty to using a firearm while intoxicated

RAVENNA, Ohio — A former northeast Ohio police chief has surrendered peacefully, ending a standoff that had gone on for a day and a-half.

Escorted by deputies, former Ravenna police chief Michael Swartout walked out of his farmhouse in handcuffs at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday and was put into the back seat of an unmarked vehicle.

The 56-year-old had been holed up inside his home since late Tuesday, when he was accused of firing a gun at his adult son.

Sheriff Duane Kaley said Swartout had numerous weapons with him and threatened that there'd be conflict if deputies entered the home. So, the power was cut off and officers including sharpshooters waited patiently.

Swartout stepped down as chief in 1998 after pleading guilty to using a firearm
