ADDISON TOWNSHIP, Mich (WXYZ) - Police say a man is recovering after being shot in the face by the instructor during a Concealed Pistol License class.

It happened on Dequindre in Addison Township. Police say the shooting was accidental.

The investigation has determined that the instructor was demonstrating two guns during the class. Officers say he first showed a semi automatic hand gun loaded with plastic training bullets. He then displayed a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver that he thought was also loaded with plastic training bullets.

It was during that portion of the class that the .38 caliber revolver accidentally went off. The bullet ricocheted off the instructional table, hitting the student in the face.

The 52-year-old was hit on his left cheek. He immediately received medical help from another student, while other participants in the class called 911. He is currently in stable condition at Troy Beaumont hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and will be reviewed by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges.

After some of the horror stories I've seen on some CCW forums, I can only guess why this type of thing doesn't happen more often. I'm very glad that my CCW instructor was very diligent about any time he handled a real firearm, he opened the chamber/action and had at least 3-4 people check to make sure it was empty before demonstrating something with it.

I leave mine unloaded and then put the bullets in right before I'm ready to shoot something. Keeps the gun from accidentally going off.

i hope the student learned a lesson... don't stand between an idiot's bullet, and the intended target.

Well since there was no intended target and I'm not even sure the student was in the line or sight on the barrel . . .

    professional assassin.

banking shots off the desk as to make the shooting appear accidental (plus a room full of witnesses to attest to this). i'd get a security detail outside this guys hospital room stat.

:hs: That really sucks. If you're careful that doesn't happen. But then again, this is just more evidence (as if we needed more) that even the best of us can get complacent and have a moment's inattention.

The fact that he placed a metal top table for this exact reason is enough to prove that he's truly a professional. It's all about preparation.

Sounds like he curved the bullet.

Meanwhile, my CHL instructor uses those blue rubber guns in the classroom for demos.

Hmm, so the article clearly states that the gun "accidentally" went off, and ricocheted off a table. Yet, the title is "Instructor shoots student"

it's obvious he was trying to turn off the lights, to use the projector... the student just got in the way.

    Me too.

If I ever have an ND, I'm not saying shit because I don't want it on OT.
I'll just keep shooting and say I saw a chupacabra.
