So, I want a pocket gun for the summer so I don't have to lug the XD around with me all the time. I want something in a .380. Was looking at the Kel-Tec P3AT, but everybody at the local shops have been telling me NOT to get it. What are OT's opinions on this gun, as far as reliability. What else is out there in the same size? :dunno:

I really want a S&W 642 also, but that wouldn't be so much a pocket gun because of the bulk of the cylinder.

The p3at is a great gun, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Curious to hear WHY they said not to get it.

    I'm getting one.

Thats what I hear a lot on OT, but the gun buffs at the range tell me otherwise.

Multiple shops too, not just one. :dunno:

From what I got out of it they just aren't reliable enough to be a carry gun.

i have a p3at, i put 200 rounds thru it this weekend, and some more prior at the range. no problems with it at all. very light, and reliable with a little buffing out of the box.
i use a desantis nemesis pocket holster, under $20 on ebay.

If anything, if they really do think it's such a horrible gun, they shouldn't have a problem cutting you a good deal on one.

they don't even sell Kel-Tec's anymore. They said the only good gun they made was the P-11 (before they started mass producing).

I might just say fuck it and buy a Kahr PM9, and just carry that ALL the time.

Buy it and give it a try. If you don't like it, you can sell it pretty easily and get something else. There are 2 P3ATs in this household and neither have ever had a problem. Verm's is a 1st gen and mine is a 2nd gen.

Some of the earlier production p3at's had an extraction problem. Kel-tec made a new extractor. Reports about new ones are pretty much flawless. I'd say the shops are behind the times. Find out if one of those guys has one they'd sell you cheap since they're so unreliable. I'd be more worried about buying a kahr.

Thats funny, because the people I know that carry Kahr's have nothing but good things to say about them. A guy at the local shop is also a reserve LEO and carries a PM9 when he is off duty.

I guess I could do that with a good holster, it would still be a hell of a lot smaller and lighter than the XD.

The P3AT's are really reliable now. I'm going to be getting either one of those to compliment my P32 or a 442-1 if I can find one.

I hope to pickup a PF-9 when they come out, but I'm going to wait for first run bugs to get worked out, and also for the hard chrome slides to become available.

Check out the kahr forums on glock talk http://www.glocktalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&forumid=111 especially the barrel issues. I don't own one, but it does look like out of the box reliablity is at least somewhat questionable.

The pf9 is essentially the size as the p11 but thinner. To me, thickness isn't the problem with the p11, its the height and length. Ymmv but to me its not making the p11 any more of a pocket gun. Some disagree.

Fwiw I also have a 642 and its a fine gun. It is indeed thicker, but to me not in an annoying way. Plus revolvers don't usually print in a way that would make the average person think gun. What I don't like about the 642 is that its 5 shots versus the 8 I have in my p3at with +1 mag extension, its taller (too tall for some of my jeans actually), and it weighs twice as much as the p3at. Its got a little more uumph per round, but I don't think either round is powerful enough to justify running jhp's either. I'll keep both, but if I could have only 1 it'd be the p3at because of simply how very easy it is to drop it in your pocket and forget it.

If I were loaded I'd buy a rohrbaugh probably though.
