I have an Excel spreadsheet on my desktop that I sync with my pocket PC. Somehow something got fucked up because now I have a .pxl file on my desktop (instead of a .xls) and neither Excel 2000 nor Pocket Excel 2003 will open it. Activesync won't convert the .pxl to .xls. I've looked for something to recover or extract the data but I can't find anything.

Can't you just change the file name on your desktop PC then resynch?

I had already tried what you suggested and it didn't work. I get the same error as when I try to drag the .pxl file from the PPC to my Windows desktop. Its corrupt and can't be opened or converted.

Can you tell Pocket Excel to "Save As" the spreadsheet specifically in .XLS format? I'd be surprised if Microsoft managed to overlook such a grievous flaw in their Office suite.

Pocket Excel won't even open it. Its like the file got corrupted on the PPC, then at the next activesync, it couldn't read the corrupted pxl file so it just copied it as-is to the desktop. I've looked for utilited to repair damaged pxl files but didn't have any luck.

That sucks. If the file is corrupted, though, you're probably SOL.
