UPDATE: MS Office Picture Manager did a better job at brightening the photo than Vista image editor did...still obviously noisy tho
    [IMG]

It came out very dark and with loss of a lot of detail...???
I made it brighter in windows Vista image editor/viewer...

    Nikon D40
    18-135mm 3.5-5.6G ED
    1/60
    f - 5.6
    ISO 800
no flash (not an option in this circumstance)
    auto white balance
image size - small, JPEG fine (resized a bit for upload)
    matrix metering

please don't laugh at me, i want suggestions...this shot looked good on my camera LCD, but is very dark and lacking detail on my computer screen. i was zoomed in pretty far, so that is the smallest f-stop I had.

is it out of focus? :noes: i was manually focusing on the dude...i thought i had him :o ???

you're better off leaving the focusing to the camera. Do a single point focus... because afterall, the camera is a bit smarter when it comes to focusing.

As far as the picture goes, if you shoot RAW you'd have a little more control over the white balance. Sadly, I've noticed on mine that leaving the auto white balance on indoors fucks w/ my lighting. I either change to RAW or do it manually.

On a side note... I had no clue the D40 had that much noise at ISO 800. :eek3:

yea i've been having trouble with noise :sad2:

but my vision is VERY good, i think, so i trust my manual focus more than autofocus...that was really my reason for getting a DSLR...

i have more problems with the noise in this pic than the focusing...i can't really tell that it's out/in focus with all the noise...you're right...thanks for seriously replying, btw

You have more noise than focus... although, the picture does look a bit out of focus. Look at the patch on his sleeve, you can't make anything out on it. :o

Manual focusing is great... but you'll learn to like the autofocus eventually. ;)

but in cases like this where you gotta catch the security dude before he sees you taking a pic (ok i don't think he's really security...but i wasn't sure when i took it :mamoru: ) the autofocus takes as long as my manual focus...and it's noisier...

...and if the autofocus screws up it makes me ANGRY cause i can't fix it...but if i screw up manual focus then it tells me my eyes are doing bad and i can fix that by getting rest, etc :run:

the D40 autofocus is a HELLUVA lot better than my canon a410 P&S, but it's still not something i trust...:run:

you need to look for the option of a single area focus. If you leave it on regular focus, its going to focus on whatever it wants to focus on.

Of course, if you have a faster lens... it focuses faster than you can blink. :eek3:

the shutter speed was too long. i would have bumped up the ISO to 1600. that would have given you a 1/120 shutter speed.

I can't imagine how much more noise would be showing w/ 1600 vs. what its showing now. :dunno:

it's also noisy because you had to bump up the brightness. two things cameras have trouble with in low light situations is focusing and metering. if it tends to underexpose all of the time, you can set the camera to +.5 or +1EV.

so u think if i were to have gotten a brighter shot to begin with, it would be clearer?

    yea...probably, right...but...how could i have gotten a brighter shot?
the only thing i could have done was ramp it up to 1600 :noes:

maybe i'll try a comparison of 1600 vs. 800 sometime.......3200 is rediculous and will be grainy no matter what...
i'm not sure if the ISO processing of my Nikon is better or worse than Vista brightness settings...or maybe i should try working with a different program...
:o yea i'm working with different programs now and it's looking better :o

yeah, pretty much. or use flash. you could have also used an even slower shutter speed, but it probably would have come out more blurry

how did that even make it off your digital storage? what is it that you like about this image? that's not even being a smartass, I'm honestly curious.

Wow, I knew the d40 was bad, but it handles noise worse than my point and shoot.
