I need to purchase a DSLR before the end of summer, but I am at the point right now where I just can not bite the bullet with any particular one! Reasons why I can't choose:

    - I like the 40D a lot. The rebates Canon has going on right now are very impressive, and the lower price of the 40D is ideal being that it will allow me to spend more money on glass.

    - I could get something like the 30D and get some really nice glass, but I'm afraid that I won't be satisfied with the 30D.

    - Canon is bound to release a 5Dmk2 anytime now, which will make the used 5D market look very good, which means the 5D would be a viable option. But with the higher price of the 5D body, I'm left with less money for glass.

    - With the release of the D700, the used D300 market is going to be in my price range, and that camera is very nice. It is going to be a bit more expensive than the 40D, so less money for glass. I have yet to mess around with one though, something I need to do.

    - If Canon releases anything that is supposed to compete with the D300 (50D?), then I'll really have a tough decision.

Ultimately I'd like to spend no more than $2200 on a lens/body combo. It would be nice to get that number a bit lower though.

I know that one of you will ask me what I'm looking to shoot, so to answer that, I'm interested urban photography, still life, concerts, maybe some landscapes, and I'm sure I'll be doing a little bit of sports.

    Help me OTAP!

From everything I have read, last two weeks, buying uber body is not going to help as much as nice lenses, why not buy a 40D and great lenses...

Yeah I'm thinking about getting one of those for a back-up body.

Just get the 40D and spend more on glass.

Look at the 70-200 f/4 (only like $560 with rebates) and either a UWA (10-22, 10-20, 11-16) or the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 I hear so many good things about (but dont own)

I would suggest taking a hard look at what kind of photography you want to do and go from there. The 30D is a great camera for 90% of typical photographic needs. I agree with the others that the glass you put in front of the camera is more important than the camera body.

Having said that, I've seen my favorite body, the 5D body going for $1500 lately.

I agree. I almost went with another 5D for my second body but decided to get the 1D Mk IIn instead.

5D is looking so good right now. I love the images I've seen from it.

For those of you that own the 5D, is there anything vital that you believe is missing? Anything that hinders your shooting? Will it do OK in a sports setting?

The only drawback is 3 fps is the fastest shooting speed.

30d is more then enough in most applications.

i'd say get a used 20/30d and good glass. i started with an xt and 4 or 5 months ago bought a used 30d. i'd recommend just starting with a xxd body and best glass you can afford. once you know more about what you need, you can upgrade the body, but the glass will transfer.
