What is with the san and chan in at the end of names? I am sure it would make alot more sense if I knew.

They're called honorifics. They sort of define people's relationships and levels of respect toward one another. I tried explaining it to my friends like this:

    -chan is a cutesy nickname.
-kun is a term of endearment.
-san is the standard polite address.
-sama is more like reverence or deep respect.

-dono is archaic and isn't used except by old people. It fits between -san and -sama in terms of honor level.

-chan is an affectionate honorific for girls usually, but also used towards young males by their parents, grandparents, etc. Using this honorific indicates that you have a close relationship.
-kun is an affectionate honorific for boys, could sometimes be used to belittle a male, but not too often. Also indicates close relationship.
-san is the standard polite honorific. Used for most occasions where politeness is required or whether you are unsure if it is needed. Always good to use this.
-sama is a honorific used for people you respect or of someone of higher status.

I've heard girls called "kun" before. :hsughno: It's infrequent, but it happens.

it's supposed to come across as strange. the ones who usually do this are older serious guys who call younger girls by kun.
