I got tracked downloading movies. And 2 warning letters from my ISP. My torrents are going a lot slower now, but the letters don't mention anything about it. What's wrong?

Did you get the movies via Bittorrent, or did you P2P those?

Dude if you continue to download movies after they have contacted you, you will have no way of denying anything if you get sued.

Why not quit while you're ahead?

A friend of mine got a letter a few days ago too, he's laying low for a little while, if you have half a brain you will too (stop downloading). You are aware that there are fines involved with copyright infringement?

    That's a load of shit.

On the letter front, if you download certain material from public sites (piratebay, mininova etc) chances are you will be "tracked". All it is really is that your IP was seen on those torrents, the company sends you ISP a letter and they basically forward that "concern" to you.

Chances are nothing will happen to you, but the odd time the big companies do go after the little people which would be bad. My advice is to use less public "members only" sites, start using usenet or irc or private ftps, or best yet just buy the dvds.

edit: On the slowdown issue, some ISPs cap torrent traffic and it may be happening to you. Whether it is a result of the letter or not is anyones guess. If you use a non standard port, or change it to a common port (22,443) you may get around the issue. Another option could be to use a client like utorrent and force encryption, which gets by most of the torrent capping currently in place.

Jesus has a good point. 20 dollars for a newly released DVD is insane! They need to sell versions w/ just the movie, no dvd menus, special features etc... I dont even watch those usually.

Well in my opinion, it's the little guy we're screwing the most, like the boom mike operator or costumer or something...people not too different from us is who's not getting the money when we pirate... supposedly close to $6 mil!

It's funny cause back when VCRs first came out all the movie studios tried to get them banned for similar reasons they fight downloading now -- it turns out that VHS was a huge part of their revenue years back. I download movies/shows for the convenience factor. I don't want to drive to the rental store or wait for something from netflix, I'd rather just make a few clicks and have a fresh movie either within a few hours or the next day. To me this is nothing about 'sticking it to the man.'

I'd gladly pay a few bucks to download a high-quality version of a movie from a high-speed server. Until I can use such a service with as wide of a selection as torrents or netflix I'll be downloading and accept the risk. It's important for the thread starter and others downloading to be aware that the MPAA is out there searching and people have been fined/settled for thousands of dollars, getting letters in the mail is something that would stop me...for a while.

They're probably packet-shaping you. Turn on encryption in Azureus to get around it (at least that's what you do here to get around it).

No, Tom's salary is paid by the producer, who recoups the expense by selling movie tickets. Selling the DVD is a courtesy because it keeps people from taking video cameras into the theater and because they can bank some extra cash selling them. They could bank extra cash selling cheap recorded DVDs with the movie name written with a Sharpie, too, but the fancy case instantly quadruples the "value" of the package.

Oh, and stop stealing shit. If you don't like something enough to buy it new, then buy it used or don't buy it at all. Stealing just gives the big companies an opportunity to sue you and reinforce the righteousness of their business practices.
