Both 50", both support 1080p. What is the difference?

Nobody within a 2 hour drive even carries the Elites, and I'm not trusting UPS/FedEx with a 100lb $6K TV. What would I be giving up by going with the "standard" vs the Elite?

A huger wang is a perk, but there must be something else for $1k.

If you order from most reputable online dealers, they won't ship via UPS/FedEX; they use truck freight companies that are experienced in dealing with appliances/electronics.

I bought my 60" Pioneer online and it arrived in perfect condition with a phone call before delivery to make sure I was there, and I've never heard of anyone having a problem with the shipping process.

unless you plan on having the 110FD professionally calibrated with a 5nm spectro, you will not see ANY differences between the 5010 vs 110FD. If I were you, just buy the 5010 if there is no elite around.

    here are the differences:

    - Home Media Gallery - networking functionality
    - ISFccc
    - New Independent Gamma Control for heightened color calibration
    - Remote Control - Illuminated / Present Mode / Learning Mode
    - AV Selection Memory - PURE, ISF-Day, ISF-Night
    - Advanced Picture-in-Picture (4 positions), Picture-side-Picture for use with Home Media Gallery & Broadcast (3 positions) and Still Picture capability
    - Intelligent Mode (off/on)
    - Color Temperature Adjustment – 5 settings (High / Mid-High / Mid / Mid-Low / Low)
    - Color Temperature Manual Adjustment
    - Color Management
    - Color Space (1 / 2)
    - MPEG Noise Reduction
    - Block Noise Reduction Activation (off/on)
    - Mosquito Noise Effect
    - Mosquito Noise Reduction (off/on)
    - 3 DYC (1/2/3)
    - I-P Mode
    - IR Repeater
    - 2 year warranty
    - First Color Pro Filter versus First Color Pro Plus Filter

the biggest thing to me is the speakers on the side, and the warranty.

If you looked at them side by side you would see a difference...

Elite FTW! I have a PRO-940HD now and love it. Unless someone else comes out with something super awesome (in a few years) I'll probably stick with Pioneer.

However, the Sharp Prototypes at CES were pretty damn amazing...

    No not really...

It might have been the setup then. There is a dealer in my area that has both of them and had them side by side and the Elite IMO had better blacks and motion... :wtc:

He was trying to push the Elite, so it would make sense if he had it look better...

Same panel, so the blacks and motion of ALL things should be identical. But I would of course expect a dealer to have the Elite set up better. Nothing embarrasses a retailer more than the customer being unable to see a difference between the 'base' model and the 'special' model.

the stores that carry the Elite line (like Specialty stores Soundadvice, etc) usually have a better setup and calibrate the Elite line somewhat...it is their flagship line, and they HAVE TO make it look better to command the premium.

your average BestBuy is gonna have the 5010 straight out of the box, so the settings are not correct and thus you can see a difference.

The Elite does have more calibration options (ISFccc, more options,e tc), so if an ISF calibrator does his job right, the elite should look slightly better than a 5010.....but the difference is very small if any.

Since I couldn't find the Elites the other TV I was looking at was the Sony Bravia XDR... I know the black levels are not as good on LCD's in general but I've read that LCD might be better for general viewing (since this isn't a dedicated "home theater" TV).

Bah, dunno. I don't mind paying for a quality set but I hate feeling like I need a fucking doctorate in consumer electronics to pick out a good unit.

It'll be replacing a 36" CRT so whatever I get will be a huge upgrade. I have decent sound so it will be good to get the video up to par.

You only need to know 3 things to pick a good TV:

    Pioneer
    Panasonic
Samsung (if you want an LCD - ie you will be using it in a brightly lit room or you'll be exclusively using it for inputs at high def resolution equal to the native resolution of the panel)

OT has sold more Kuro panels than all of Pioneer's advertising combined.
