I'm not a stranger to piercing, and my body is quite rapid about healing, but I have a question. If I were to ppierce me ears, how large could I go initially? HOw long would it take before I could start stretching? ANd if I plan on gauging, what gauge do you suggest I get pierced with?

And dermel punching is out of the question, seems far too painful.

You can scalpel them to go to a lower guage right away i'm pretty sure. I say just pierce it around 10 ,8 maybe 6 and just stretch from there. You get a good experience with stretching that way :hs:

WOuld that be punching? I mean, would that entail actually carving out my ear?

I pierced the holes in my ears (9) with safety pins at a young age. I had a friend who worked at a tattoo/piercing shoppe and he would give me body jewelry that was missing beads (captives) the second ball for barbells, etc. Basicall jewelry they didn't need.

So, once my piercings would heal, I would just jam the next gauge in there. Wait for it to heal, and then repeat. I got them (the bottom holes) to zeros, the next up at 2's, the ones above that at 8's, and then normal earrings (12gauge) in the rest.

I left the jewelry out for a while (few years) when I started working behind the bar at nicer bars then I started, so they got a bit smaller, so all I wera now are 2's in my main holes, and 10's in the ones above.

When you want to start at a higher gauge punching is for cartiledge piercings and scalpelling is for your lobes.

my piercer told me it would be possible to pierce then run a taper thru right off the bat, but it would be extremely painful...

I've heard that too but it's more like pierce at 10 and stretch to 8 immediately not 4 or 2.

Thanks I was wondering when you would chime in ;)

So because the piercing is fresh you don't get blow-outs? How is the healing time in comparison to scalpelling?

its still possible to get blowouts but they're less likely to happen. some people have no problem with this method, others it just doesnt work for. i had a kid i pierced at 12g and stretched to 4g no problem. he could have probably went to 2g or 0g if i tried. a kid who used to work for me had his pierced at 5g and stretched to 4g and i had to shove the taper in with all my strength. it just didnt want to go. a lot of it depends on the elasticity of the skin. as for healing id say either one will heal up quickly. i had my ears scalpelled from 1/2" to 3/4" and most of the healing was done in about 2weeks.
