70-200L f/2.8 IS, with cannon 2x tele. All hand held @ about 380-400mm. Even with IS, its still hard to hold steady at full zoom. ISO was under 800 for all of them. Most are a little blurred from the animal moving, or me moving :hs: Couldnt get a fast shutter speed, was early morning, and about to rain.

not too bad. Would of been alot better with a monopod though, and better light. I would use it any time in good light and with a monopod without any worry on degrading of IQ too much.

    Update: New pics from today

couple of new pics, didn't use the monopod on any. All @ 400mm.

saturation turned down one notch on the camera

tele really ruins the true sharpness of that lens

i mainly wanted to test out how much the 2x tele degraded the IQ.

Sadly, the conditions wernt right for it. But also learned the limitations of it. It needs alot of light, or a monopod.

o yeah, I wanted more saturation in the pics, I think it makes zoo pictures 10x better. Although I agree it is alittle bit too much.

But Ill back it down a notch on the camera(40d). I was using it on one of the custom picture styles.

    ruins? no.

    degrades it somewhat? yes.

You still get a much better picture @ 400mm then you would if you cropped a 200mm(no tele) shot to make it the same size.

no, when i got there I noticed I forgot my CF cards at home and all I had was the 2gb card that was in the camera :hs:

So, just set it to L/fine jpeg so I could get more shots.

    I really wish I would have gone with the 70-200 2.8 + 2x tele instead of the 100-400 :o

    I do love the 2.8 :)

but, you will undoubtedly get better IQ from 200-400 range then me with the 2x tele

no doubt but I'd take the slight hit in IQ to have the ability to shoot at 2.8 :o

im going to a different zoo in a few hours, and weather is gonna be bright and sunny. This zoo also doesn't have trees covering 99% of it, blocking out light like the ones in the above pictures.

so I should get some real pics of what the 2x tele can do.

    ill bring the monopod too.

I need to pick up a lens for wildlife/zoo shots this summer, the 70-200 with 2x doesnt look too bad actually I was leaning towards the 100-400 :hs:

its a great lens and the f2.8 is very useful.

I'm on my way to the other zoo right now. Its heavy overcast bit looks like the sun is gonna come out. Got the monopod this time though, so no worries. :)

    Will post pics later.
