I guess you could improve them by shooting in more direct sunlight, but other than, pretty cool.

Actually direct sunlight make pictures worse with harsh highlights and squinting subjects.
You've got one frumpy-looking dog.
try not to shoot backlit, or if you do burn the face of the dog a bit
As fatass said. Have the dog face you into the sun, or fill in the shadows with a fill flash. You're not going for a super dramatic portrait of your dog.
Some of the background shadows definately need some warming up, too.
