So for starters, I have and will be using a copy of Windows XP Pro as the OS. I will be getting a LSI RAID Controller. I am not sure yet which I will get but it is either the MegaRAID SAS 8408E which is a PCI Express 1.0a compliant (on an x8 lane width) or the MegaRAID SAS 8208ELP which is a PCI Express x4.

(I don't plan on OCing. I rarely play games and if I do it is AirWarrior 3, Command & Conquer Red Alert, and shit like that (I haven't bought any games since the late 90s).... I would like to try out the new CnC3 game though.

    So, on to the build.......

The 5 Seagate ES drives will build the RAID while I am going to run the 1 Seagate 7200.10 drive for OS/Progs. I am doing this so I can reformat and not worry about the RAID being wiped out by Windows.

Here are the HW links (did the above b/c I thought it was easier to read):
    potential 8208 RAID card
    potential 8408 RAID card

    Case
    Video Card
    PSU
    CPU
    RAM
    RAID Drives
    OS Drive
    DVD-Burner
    Thermal Compound

My idea is to have a system that will be able to run anything I want and provide stable and redundant storage security while keeping it as low cost as possible.

I also currently have a Plextor DVD burner (IDE) and a PCI Linksys Wireless card that I will put in the system as well. So, my shit needs to be compatible with WinXP Pro (I see no issue here) as well as being able to support the LSI RAID Controller which will be running a RAID 5. I do not know what motherboard I want so give me some suggestions (prefer to have the potential to upgrade to support quad-core Intel chips) as well as critique my build.

You would love the Gigabyte P35 DS4 with that build.

I just finished one this weekend.

Right now i'm running an E6600 with 2gb of Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1066 memory,

    but I've got a Q6600 on it's way.

It was basically plug and play. No bios settings needed other than boot order.

That was one that I had in my list of choices. My list was too big so instead of trying to weed through it I made this post.... but anyway...
    1. Would there be any issues with that board having the video card in one of the x16 slots and the RAID controller in the other (like the video one running at x4, the x1 slots not working, etc)?

    2. If I did get the x8 RAID card, would it work in the x16 slot even though the second x16 slot is a actually an x4 in the specs?

What RAID card would require x8 throughput?

    The 8408E will work fine @ 4X.

With expanders that card will support 32 drives. They also have a 16 port card available

As Doc said any of the P35 based Gigabyte boards are great

hmmm, so no one sees any problems with my build or any way to make it cheaper without sacrificing performace? (odd, you're scarying me OT, not usually this quick to say its ok)
