I listen to a lot of different kinds of music (I was once complimented for having Mozart, Godsmack, and Hootie & The Blowfish in the same CD collection), but one genre I've never consciously ventured into is indie, whatever the hell that means. In fact, sometimes it seems more like indie is a label applied to pretty much anything to make it more appealing to a certain crowd as opposed to actually being a distinct genre, but I'm open to the possibility that I just don't know WTF I'm talking about.

So, can I get some recommendations on official "indie" albums (preferably as non-angsty as possible) to listen to?

here are a few you could start with, though the label, "indie" is far reaching...

the deers, tapes 'n tapes, wolf parade, my morning jacket, tv on the radio

they're all pretty different, but i'm sure you can appreciate at least one of them

Lately, I've been listening to Benjy Ferree http://www.myspace.com/benjyferree
"Pisstopher Chrisstopher" is a good song but I like all his stuff.

Howlies are pretty good too. http://howlies.com/
Check out the song "Angeline" if you need a song to help you get into them.

I'll second Animal Collective but it's a little harder to get into when compared other stuff like the Howlies. But they put out a new album like every 3 days so there is always new material (not really but you know..)
