Now that the format war is over and I own an 1080p 120Hz HDTV, it's about time I jump on the bandwagon. I don't need anything too fancy, just something with as many different types of output connections as I can get, and I don't need any sort of a combo VCR/Blu-Ray or TV tuner/Blu-Ray if they even make those anymore. I don't own any tapes and my TV tunes itself just fine. It would be nice if it were something I could feasibly suggest as a Christmas present for me, but if the reliable ones are all too pricey then I guess I'll just buy myself one at an after-Christmas sale.

What brands/models should I be looking at?

    PS3.

It's not much more than the stand alone units and it's actually one of the better Blu-Ray players on the market. The games are a nice bonus.

at this price point, yeah I'd say PS3.

If you were looking high end, I'd go with Pioneer 23-FD

I had a hunch you were going to say PS3. I'd certainly hope it would be one of the better players since Blu-Ray is a Sony technology, but is it really that good of a value if all I'm going to do is watch movies on it? I mean, I have an Xbox and a Nintendo DS and I play them maybe twice a year, so even being able to play PS3 games occasionally would probably not be worth the money unless we're talking like a $20 difference.
