    ISO 200

    Just screwing around with the new lens. Amazing by the way.

    I has a question. I aimed the flash straight up for bounce. What is the best way to change the harshness/brightness on his face? It's obvious that a flash went off for the face. Is there a way to blend it with the surround ambient light?

    If this was a pic of a person, the face would look pretty damn harsh.

    slow the shutter speed down to control ambient exposure. maybe invest in a stofen or pocket bouncer and shoot the sb600 off camera.

    already a stofen on it. i shot it TTL with -1.0

    i will have to try that. will have to try on something inanimate so it doesn't move and blur.

    try the same picture without the stofen. i seem to get better results without my stofen if i'm bouncing it off the ceiling.

    no, lol try it on an animate object... thats the idea of the flash, is to freeze something more so than a shutter could. just try this, go into commander mode, hold the sb600 with your left hand as far right to the upper left as you can pointing at your cat(make sure your onboard flash is set to -- so it doesnt add to the exposure(but it will just a tiny tiny bit anyways) and shoot at like 1/15 or 1/30 and try that without messing with your fec(which you said you had set to -1.0 atm).

    and yea, pointing up at a ceiling with the stofen on it will still give it a bit of that direct flash look because one of the facing of the stofen is still pretty much pointing directly at the subject. so try the bounce without it on.

    from all the strobist stuff i've been reading, they say;

    shutterspeed and iso controls ambient light
    aperture controls flash exposure (if flash power is constant)

    but yeah, lose the stofen if you're bouncing it off the roof/wall

    wow nice. i heard the term before but always thought it "only" mean slowing the shutter down for more ambient.

    i looked it up and read some pretty nice tips on it. i need to try this more.

    thx for advice

    ISO impacts both (overall exposure). Snag a copy of the one light DVD, I think someone around here has it hosted.

    will do, cheers

    so, if iso and flash power is constant

    shutterspeed = ambient light
    aperture = flash exposure

    ?

    Pretty much. So if you have a shot setup, and you have the aperture and shutter where you want them, i.e. the strobe light and ambient light are in the proportion you want, but the overall image is a tad underexposed, you can add an overall stop by bumping the iso up one, and it won't mess with your lighting ratio.

    edit: I'm talking about shooting manual
