Just wanted to get OT's opinion. I know we have some strongly opinions on here...and well as the "elitest crew" which isn't always a bad thing when you are looking for high quality.

This is what I am looking for:

bulletin board system that is useable by a "noob" designer
Would like to be able to add affiliate links on the pages somewhat like OT has at the top
Wealth of online support where I can learn more about wtf I am doing :mamoru:

I threw out the names phpbb (because I already run one and know how to customize the graphics) and vbulletin because I am a member on a few boards that use this and I like the interface.

    Open to other suggestions...

    What is OT running on?

    Thanks.

    OT is run on vbulletin.
I run my site on vbulletin. I love it. Wont go back. The sheer amounts of customization that it has is outstanding.

Not sure about design wise, but you can get an indian to code you something.

How does one go about getting an indian to code for you? I have seen several people mention this lately. "code for hire" type sites?

Why do you need a forum coded? Special features?

Vbulletin is the way to go with customizing. Shit ton of mods and skins that are very very easy to implement.

Check out vbulletin.org to sift through most of the popular ones.

It looks like you have to pay for vbulletin...whereas phpbb is free. Anyway to install vbulletin and use it for free and you "setup" your site, then get legit when you go live?

Or is this just like any other software...you can pirate it and use it at your own risk?

vB is definitely worth the money. It costs shit all considering the support you get plus access to vbulletin.org if you have a license key.

I run Vbulletin on 6 different sites with 300,000 total users.

The new version and mods are pretty nice actually. Vbulletin used to be just a small part of the websites I run, now I build everything in to vbulletin/vbadvanced. It's turning mor ein to a social site, and thats fine with me.

    Go with vbulletin.

I have a legit owned vb license I'm looking to sell if you're interested...could get you a little bit of a discount ;). (also selling a vbseo license)

phpbb is a decent script. A lot of people hate on it but it is pretty powerful and has plenty of support, community and free addons/themes and of course it is free. Worst problem is the crazy amount of spambots that target phpbb regardless of what they do to try to fix it.

But if you are serious about your forum, nothing beats vb.

My issue is that this will be a side project taking the back seat to another side project...so it may be months, or even a year before I get it "live". I don't want the clock ticking on a license in the mean time.

I guess I am just being cheap.

let me put my flame suit on first. as a free solution phpbb3 is a great choice. but as your site gains traction and brings in more traffic, it would be wise to convert to vbulletin due to performance (from what i've been reading). but be warned that switching from phpbb to vbulletin is no picnic.

vbulletin's one time license fee isn't expensive at all, it's like $180.
