I am trying to install a phpbb on my site using 1and1 hosting. I am at the installation step and when I try to install using database type MySQL 3.x I get the message
    phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

when I use MySQL 4.x/5.x I get the message
    Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local

MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in

    /homepages/23/d150997628/htdocs/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 48

    in /homepages/23/d150997628/htdocs/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 330

    in /homepages/23/d150997628/htdocs/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 331
    phpBB : Critical Error

Anyone know what the problem is?

Sounds like you entered incorrect database name or password but on top of that you must find out whet versions of PHP and MySQL is being run on the server.

You just need these correct details and it'll be good to go.

your first problem is 1&1. They're like the shittiest of the shit.

Your second problem is you are probably using the wrong hostname for your MySQL server.

(btw, the person above is incorrect... it is not the db or the password -- at least not yet. It cannot connect to the server.)

I know...I hate 1and1...I'm just playing around with this to see if I can get it set up.

The host name field has "localhost" . Is that what should be changed? Do I change it to the site URL?

it needs to be whatever the mysql server hostname is. It is rarely localhost these days... Generally they run dedicated mysql servers. Talk to 1&1 to determine what the proper hostname is.

What is MySql? I noticed that I get this icon in my tray on startup but I don't use it. I haven't been able to find any use for it.

It would have taken you about 1/100th of the time you used to type that out if you just googled for it and you would have had your answer.

My girlfriend installed it when she installed some Real estate MLS program, and as far as I can tell never uses it. She says she doesn't know what its for and we have sinse deleted that program.

Person #2 is right, in PHPBB if you supply an invalid database name you will get a 'could not connect to the database' error.
