Posting this question on a few forums:

Hi, I am interested in purchasing some books on PHP/mysql. Only one I would think of purchasing off the top of my head would be the Dummies series. So, I am looking for input and suggestions from you all. What helped you, what didn't, etc.

Currently, I run a PHP based image hosting webpage. [ www.pichold.com ]. I know enough to get by, and to edit prewritten code. But, I'd like to be the pre-writer of the code. To be able to script things off the top of my head.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Jesse

I've been disappointed with the "Dummies" series in the past.

WROX has always impressed me. I have a book by Wrox called "Professional PHP4" that is excellent. I also have their Java and ASP books and been equally happy.

Wrox and O'reilly books are good. Also, I always suggest going to Amazon.com and search for php books. Then read the reviews.

And the "better together" book it comes with? ;)

I was also told to check Amazon for reviews, and look for it on half.com

    You asked you? :p

Actually, the one I posted is the current version of the book (3rd Ed.). There were quite a few minor errors in the 2nd's example code..lol.

I actually got my copy from eBay in a huge ass lot of PHP books. Some $1500 in books for a little over $100 :bigthumb:

    I asked me? ...

Amazon has an option to buy it with another book and get them both for cheaper. I was asking if the other book is worth it to buy them together.

    (I was joking around btw..lol)

Well, if cost is a big concern, I would take a look on eBay.

The second book in the link you posted I've never really liked personally. It has a few good points in it, but it's really not worth the money IMHO. You'd be better off hitting up a Borders (or other bookstore) and skiming through it there.

For reference purposes, the docs on php.net are excellent.
