So i've been messing around with php for doing a basic mysql based news feed editor.

So far i basically ssh into the server write some code and test it on the browser. I'm using the VI editor and am tired of it. Is there some sort of environment you guys recommend? Something that lets me write the code, test it, and then upload it?

    VI sucks balls!

eclipse also has PHP support, I haven't taken the time to learn eclipse though.

    Typically I just use dreamweaver.

Windows? If so, look at WAMP (Windows Apache Mysql, PHP) server. It allows you to have a virtual environment, and it includes apache and mysql as well.

    Super easy install.

Linux or MAC have the LAMP and MAMP server, respectively.

edit: They are a little harder to configure.

Uh, does this server have a control panel installed?

    If so, which?

    Does it have phpmyadmin?
If not, why not install it?

Then you can just ftp and use phpmyadmin for mysql.
You can edit files on the fly with a proper ftp client and built in editor or an external editor of your choice (bbedit, dreamweaver, textmate, etc.).
If you want simplicity and don't want to learn all this new unnecessary shit just for this then...yeah.

    :werd:

IDE's get really complicated, really fast. The PHP language in general is such a clusterfuck that it's pretty hard to find anything with decent typeahead like you might be used to with VS. I only really write it in dreamweaver for the syntax highlighting.

You can boot into knoppix using a cd, and by default has apache, php, and mysql. Thats how we do work on the computers at school. Just use a usb thumb drive as your home directory.

Start the server, do everything in the directory you specify, and, umm... read some tutorials? If you have programming experience you can't go wrong with the O'Reilly books...

If you're not a programmer look at the "Learn XXX in 24 hours" they are usually good starts.

IIS isn't really designed to play well with either of those, running a LAMP setup is your best bet.

  20. i use wamp myself. love it with all my heart.
