Bored, and learning about the flash system on my D200. Which did you like better? What can be done to make boring car shots good?

    Those aren't very good.

I can't tell you why though. I just don't like them.

    First pic is crap.

Second pic would rock with a brighter red light encompassing the entire shifter setup, and do away with whatever is causing that glare in the upper left portion of the pic.

Yeah. Car shots are boring, I did the best I could. If i photoshopped in some borders and more lens flare...it'd be the greatness!

Because there is no light on the object you are trying to take a picture of?

    Yep.

I was trying to bounce the red off the shiftknob for more 'tension' in the 1st shot. 2nd one, I wanted a silhouette...Couldn't think of what else to do while taking pictures in a garage.

Now that i see both shots after a night's sleep, they both reallly do suck.

I would probably like the second shot if there was a seperate light coming in from the left...as well as a very faded out (blurry) background defeating any other light that could 'catch' my eye.

IMO, the knob doesn't take the center of attention...it 'shares' it more than anything.

I don't like either of them :dunno:

Exposure is a tad under. I'd work on that first.

:nono: They are only boring when the photographer doesn't know what they are doing.

Only way to learn is to try it, ask questions, then do it again. Wow, that could sound really sexual if you turned it around.

I had flash in both of those...hence the "Bored, and learning about the flash system on my D200." statement up top.

So what are the recommendations here? I could mess with it in photoshop, and bring it some contrast and color...

Honestly though, how do you make something that is uninteresting...interesting? What else could I have done in this environment? (car interior, shiftknob, red). Sometimes I feel like the photographer can only do so much...b/c the environment has to be there too. That's why nature shots are taken when the sun is low with lots of shadows and hues in the sky. noon high sun is boring...Am I right?

  17. #2 could be a great shot if you could give it a second try and do it with better lighting.

I think you do need to learn the flahs system on your D200.

do you have an SB600 or 800? if yes, commander mode.. then try out! fill flash, lower or higher output, left placement, right, top, below, colored filter, long exposure and "lighting", etc.

you should try and try again, ask questions if you need..

SB600, I had used commander mode to light up the shifter from behind on the 2nd one. In the 1st, I had it bounce off my seat for the red glow.

I'll give it a go again. I think I like the 2nd shot better, I'll try to add more light to the shifter, without exposing the steering wheel/console.
