I'm going to be purchasing a DSLR, probably a Cannon Digital Rebel XTi. I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to SLRs and prosumer photo equipment. What should I buy? I was thinking of buying:

    • Body: Digital Rebel XTi
Tamron Lense (but I dont really understand what the numbers mean :o)
Battery Grip (comes well recommended, and I've got huge fucking hands to boot)
      Backpack
      2-4gb Card

I know i've read the threads where people always say the kit lenses suck, what would you guys recommend for a starter kit?

Those numbers on the lens are vital to know...that would be a good place to start. Brands of the backpack, battery grip and memory cars are also vital, as all 3 of those products have terrible knock-offs. Its hard to give any feedback without those things, and a reason you want the SLR. :hs:(what will you be shooting?)

I'm fairly good with photoshop and figured this would be a good hobby to get into to get me out of the house :wavey: I'm gaining weight playing video games so much.

Pick up a XT over an XTi...they're cheap as hell now.

Try a Canon 28-105 of 28-135 IS, those are good starter/learner lenses.

I have a 28-135 IS to sell you if you want ;)

sure, but if you go used, you might as well get a used 20d for 600 instead of a used 30d for more. differences aren't going to matter to a newb.

XTi, 20 or 30d (used of course) and a Tamron 17-50 and you'll be off to a good start.
